Not saying they want that player, however, Vegas need to get to a certain percentage of the cap via the expansion draft, so they will be forced to take on a few heavy contracts.
They could use this to their advantage, making deals to take on larger contracts from other teams and get a nice pick or sweetener as part of the deal. |

Goaltenders: Michael McNiven, Hayden Hawkey, Zach Fucale, Charlie Lindgren.
Defencemen: Ryan Johnston, Simon Bourque, Arvid Henrikson, Noah Juulsen, Nikolas Koberstein, Brett Lernout, Victor Mete, Magnus Nygren, Tom Parisi, Mikhail Sergachev, Casey Staum, Colin Sullivan.
Forwards: Mark MacMillan, Jeremiah Addison, Daniel Audette, Will Bitten, Matt Bradley, Jake Evans, Jeremy Gregoire, Artturi Lehkonen, Michael McCarron, Joonas Nattinen, Michael Pezzetta, Martin Reway, Nikita Scherbak, Lukas Vejdemo.
Bringing us to the players to protect:
Goaltenders: Carey Price. (Sign & trade for a first line center and 1st Rd draft pick. Lindgren replaces #CP31 and works with Waite. He's shown he's capable and Waite is the best at what he does. The current roster make-up and strategy employed by Bergevin is flawed. He has traded speed and skill for size and it has failed miserably.)
Defencemen: Shea Weber, Jeff Petry, Nathan Beaulieu. Trade Alexei Emelin if you an before the expansion draft. Not sure that's possible unless it's to the Vegas Golden Knights. He's not a Top 3 D-man
Forwards: Phillip Danault, Brendan Gallagher, Max Pacioretty, Paul Byron, Alex Galchenyuk, Charles Hudon, Alex Radulov. Personally, I'd expose Shaw. Bergevin will never do that as that would be admitting a mistake - trading 2 second round picks and not netting anything is return. Danault, Hudon & Byron have more upside than Shaw. Hell, maybe if MB grew a pair, he'd package Emelin & Shaw to the Knights
